Is Your
Website Easy to Scan?
Sure you want your website to look
professional and "pretty", but is it easy to read? It is true
that people do not read... they tend to scan. So, you need to make
sure your website is easy to scan.
Use Headlines and Bullets Lists
Avoid long, "run-on" paragraphs. Use
headlines to separate different points or sections of
information. This allows visitors to quickly find what is of
interest to them. When possible, use bullet points to get your
message across, using fewer words then a paragraph would take. If
you must have long paragraphs, use small pictures or graphics to
break up them up.
Color and Fonts
Black text against a white background may
seem boring, but it is very readable. Using colors from
different ends of the spectrum will make a website easy on the
eyes and your message to pop. Avoid using bright background
colors and background images.
Fonts
Simple fonts may be boring, but they are
easy to read. The fancier the font, the harder it is to read.
You don't need to attract people with your site... they are
already there! But you do need to keep them there, so make sure
they can read what you have to offer.
There are eight fonts that are installed on every computer and
should be the fonts you use. If you don't, your readers will see
something different, perhaps even symbols. The "standard" PC
fonts are: Arial, Arial Bold, Comic Sans, Courier, Georgia,
Times New Roman, Trebuchet, and Verdana.
Go look at your
website. As a visitor, would you read it? |

"When we were first talking to you about
designing our website, you told us that our home
page would be designed so that it could be found
by search engines. I just wanted to pass along a
compliment, because you have certainly
succeeded! When I try to find other churches on
the internet, I'm often frustrated, because they
are difficult to find. But, people searching for
our church website can always find us at the top
of the search results. Virtualtech does a great
job with this, and it really helps us!"
