Effective E-Mail Subject Lines

When you are sorting your email and deciding what to read and what to delete, what do you use?  Some people will decide based on who sent the email.  Most of us however, will use the subject line.  If this catches our eye, we will most likely open it.

In theory your subject line can be as long as you like.  But in general, people will be able to see about 50 characters.  That's all you have to use to attract their attention and convince them to open your email.

If you plan to send monthly emails, then create a subject line that is recognizable.  Something that people will see and go, "Oh, cool, the Virtualtech Newsletter!".

Consider a descriptive name for your regular emails (newsletter or updates) and then expand on it. For example:

Virtualtech News - New Search Engine Strategies

GD&T Tip - Consider a Corporate Addendum

Belsnickle Announcement - 2007 Pieces Releases

Clear and concise.  If you want to be creative, you can be, but don't be so creative that people don't know what it is about.  You also want to think about people keeping the email and having to find it later.  So make a subject line that will help them archive your emails.

Do you have a "Memorable Domain Name"?

Many of your domain names are the same as your company name. But is it hard to spell and does it say what you do?  That is where a "memorable domain name" comes in. This is a domain name that you can use anytime people will hear or see your domain name and need to remember it. (Radio ad, billboard, TV commercial). Your "memorable domain name" should be short, easily-remembered and point to your primary website.

How important is this "taking domain name"?  If you plan to utilize radio, TV, billboards, etc, to advertise your website, then it is important. For example, which is easier to remember; BernatzCosmeticDentistry.com or BeautifulTeeth.com?

Here are some things to help you come up with a "memorable domain name":

What problems do you solve for clients?
When people come to you for your products/services, what do you do for them?  A massage therapist might use NoMoreStressToday.com or a brake shop may use WeStopAnything.com.

What benefits or results do your clients see?
How do clients benefit by working with you or what results will they see? Do you save them time? Will they make more money? Will they have a healthier life? If you are a website designer you might use GetResultsFromYourWebsite.com. Or an accountant might use MoreMoneyForYou.com.

Describe what you do.
Do you have a business name that doesn't say what you do? You can use a "memorable domain name" to do that for you. For example, the name of your company is Myers International. Doesn't say what you do. Your main domain might be Myers.com but your memorable domain could be - ElectricHoists.com. Now you know that they deal with electric hoists.
